Genesis 1:16 & 17
And God made the two great lights – the
greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night – and the
stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the
earth,
When was the last time you went someplace at night beyond
the lights of civilization and really looked up at the stars? It is startling
to see how many stars are really up there in the sky. The stars are up there
all the time. It’s just that either the sun, or the lights of civilization
obscure our view of all those magnificent stars. If you cannot remember when
you last looked, take some time and do so. It is the side of creation we often
take for granted. My favorite place to look up at the stars is Lake Powell. You
are literally miles and miles from the lights of civilization. Try going there
during a meteor shower. WOW!
My little story about looking up at the stars at night has a
purpose, and a point. We often have a lot of “things” going on in our lives.
These “things” may be our work, our home, our family, our toys. All these
“things” are like little bright spots of light that fill our lives and our
time. They each demand attention to one degree or another. We could be
considered blessed if only one “thing” at a time demanded our full
attention. From my experience that is
the exception and not the rule. The problem is when these “things” glow too
brightly, they can obscure our view of the true Star of Bethlehem. When our
lives become too full, or busy, or chaotic we can lose our ability to fix our
eyes on Jesus. We may have too many distractions. And while each of these “things” may seem to
be important, where do they fall in line in comparison to your ability to fix
your eyes on Jesus? Ephesians 3 is a
wonderful passage to take time out of your busy day and read. It is so
expressive and rich in sharing the love the Apostle Paul has for the church in
Ephesus and pointing them in his letter towards Christ. We simply must remember how important it is
for us to really look up at the Star of Bethlehem that is Jesus Christ. We must
give the world a second chair and reserve the first chair for our Savior.
Difficult as that may seem right now, I urge you to fix your eyes on Jesus and
to not lose sight of Him. Just think, if you do not start right now, what else
could creep into your life that will further hinder your ability to look up at
Him as you should? Start now, and beat the rush.
PRAYER: Lord and
Giver of Life and Light. Your Son, Jesus Christ is beyond comparison. We stand
in awe of His light. He is truly the light and the life. Through Him, and only
Him do we come to You the Father. May all praise, honor, and glory go to the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One God now and forever, Amen.
